Houseplant

M.H. John

I wrote this poem about emotional deprivation and the strange ways we learn to survive it. While writing it, I kept thinking about how people can slowly adapt to environments that do not nourish them, becoming smaller and quieter just to endure them. I wanted the poem to feel dim and restrained, but still carry that instinctive human tendency to keep reaching for warmth even after disappointment.
